A renowned author and scholar, Dr. Levine is Rabbi Stanley M. Kessler Distinguished Professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies at Hartford International University of Religion and Peace, and University Professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies Emerita, Mary Jane Werthan Professor of Jewish Studies Emerita, and Professor of New Testament Studies Emerita at Vanderbilt.

“AJ” describes herself as “an unorthodox member of an Orthodox synagogue and a Yankee Jewish feminist, who until last year taught New Testament in a Christian divinity school in the buckle of the Bible Belt.”

Her prizewinning publications include The Misunderstood Jew: The Church and the Scandal of the Jewish Jesus (Publisher’s Weekly Best Books 2007); Short Stories by Jesus: The Enigmatic Parables of a Controversial Rabbi (Catholic Book Club; Spanish, Italian); The Gospel of Luke (with Ben Witherington III – the first full-length biblical commentary co-authored by a Jew and an Evangelical), the co-edited Jewish Annotated New Testament, The Bible With and Without Jesus (with Marc Z. Brettler), six children’s books (with Sandy Eisenberg-Sasso), six “Beginner’s Guides” to biblical studies, and most recently the co-edited The Pharisees.
